By the Sea begins with the troubled marriage of an American writer, Roland, and a dancer, Vanessa. The couple has fallen out of touch and no longer have the strong feelings that they once had for each other. In an effort to repair their relationship, Roland and Vanessa travel to France to escape their normal routine. In a small French village, the two connect with the simple life of the locals and remember why they loved each other in the first place.
