A team of fur trappers deals with the harsh wilderness in the Dakota Territory. Hugh Glass finds himself attacked and mauled by a bear. Instead of helping Glass, John Fitzgerald steals his equipment and leaves him for dead, believing that his injured friend has no chance of surviving. Glass manages to survive the mauling but then must face the wilderness on a journey for revenge. He faces countless obstacles and mounting grief in his attempt to find Fitzgerald.
